Essays on History

Most of Big Issue Ground sets it sights squarely on the present and future. Religion and philosophy are timeless concerns; politics involves pressing questions about how society should be organized; science and the future are obviously of immediate interest as we try to explain the world and predict its future. Alongside these topics, a section on history may seem out of place. But history - at least, the type covered here - is of more than merely historical interest; it can help us think about issues of immediate import. Besides, the evaluation of some periods - the rise of Nazism, for instance - is still hotly disputed, and of great interest to many people, quite apart from what it can teach us about, say, contemporary nationalism.
